We are so thankful for all the amazing volunteers we have been blessed with. Without them, what we do would not be possible. Meet Sue Kershaw. She is one of our regular volunteers and we absolutely love having her out on the jobsite! We did a little interview with her so you could learn a little more about her. We discussed carpentry, cycling, insulation, and Québécoise bistros. Here it is below:
How did you first get involved with Sea Island Habitat For Humanity or another Habitat affiliate?
SK: I had seen advertising for Women’s Week for several years but could never go. Until 2022. My partner and I volunteered several of the days that week and were very impressed by the patience and competence of the build supervisors. And we enjoyed the work! So we looked into becoming regular volunteers.
How long have you been volunteering with SIHH or other Habitat affiliates?
Sk: Two years.
What is your favorite job to do when volunteering?
SK: Carpentry.
What is your least favorite job to do when volunteering?
SK: Insulation.
What is your fondest memory with Sea Island Habitat?
SK: Working with Mr Gathers on his house and seeing him move in.
What are your other favorite hobbies outside of working for us for free?
SK: I enjoy being outside and active. I love kayaking and exploring nature from the water or walking. Nature always amazes me and brings me joy.
What is your weirdest or most interesting talent or fact about yourself?
SK: I am an avid fan of cycling road racing (think Tour de France).
If you could acquire a magical skill, what would it be and why?
SK: Be able to become invisible so I could watch nature without disturbing the creatures.
If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be and why?
SK: Olivier and Gabri, the owners of the Bistro in Three Pines, Quebec in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache mysteries. The Bistro itself is a safe, warm place with delicious food, fireplaces, outdoor seating. And Olivier and Gabri are eccentric, good hearted, interested people.
