This week’s volunteer spotlight features a Sea Island Habitat job site staple (and favorite), Dirk Hansen! This is an anniversary month for Habitat and Dirk. Can you guess how many years of loyal volunteer service Dirk has given to Sea Island Habitat? Find out the answer and more about Dirk in the interview below. Thank you so much for being apart of our mission and all your years of service to our community, Dirk!
How did you first get involved with Sea Island Habitat For Humanity or another Habitat affiliate?
DH: I retired from Lowe's Home Centers in August of 2006 and realized right away that I needed to be volunteering somewhere, somehow. That led me to SIHH and after one day with Steve Morgan out at Taylor Place ( some of your readers know Steve very well ) I was really impressed with what I experienced. One day led to the next day and before not too long it was 4 days a week. My life in retail involved inhumane hours working, so I always keep my week to no more than 4 days with SIHH unless circumstances dictate differently.
How long have you been volunteering with SIHH or other Habitat affiliates?
DH: This month makes 18 year now.
What is your favorite job to do when volunteering?
DH: Kitchen cabinet installation.
What is your least favorite job to do when volunteering?
DH: Insulating under the house or laying sod. (Ed. note: brother, I don’t blame ya)
What is your fondest memory with Sea Island Habitat?
DH: Really hard to say since there are so many. The people I have met and worked with over the years are the best part and I really think I have been a better person from knowing them, present company included.
What are your other favorite hobbies outside of working for us for free?
DH: I've never found a hobby to stick with but travel is something I enjoy a lot
What is your weirdest or most interesting talent or fact about yourself?
DH: Was part of Rennie Davis' security team when he gave a speech in DC back in olden days.
If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be and why?
DH: Assuming I survived, Dracula.
