People working together to build affordable homes

Volunteer Spotlight - Kim Perry

Construction volunteer and board member, Kim Perry!
  1. How did you first get involved with Sea Island Habitat For Humanity or another Habitat affiliate? I first got involved with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity by volunteering for the Women Build in 2022, I think. Mr. Jerome’s house. And, I enjoyed it so much that I had a conversation with the Director of Development about how I could get on the Board. She asked me to join the Women Build committee for the next year and then I also joined the Auction Committee before being nominated to the Board in January 2024.
  2. How long have you been volunteering with SIHH or other Habitat affiliates? I’ve been volunteering with different Habitat affiliates for over 20 years, starting in the late 1990s when I lived up in Maryland and continuing in the different locations I’ve lived.
  3. What is your favorite job to do when volunteering? I enjoy most of the aspects of building homes for our partner families, with the exception of truss day during Women Build . . . that’s a tough one! But, I’d say my favorite part is getting to work alongside the partner families who will be living in the homes we’re building.
  4. What is your least favorite job to do when volunteering? Installing trusses, without a doubt.
  5. What is your fondest memory with Sea Island Habitat? Working with and learning from previous construction supervisors Mike and Louis, and working alongside Mr. Jerome on his house.
  6. What are your other favorite hobbies outside of working for us for free? I’m a history nerd so I like volunteering as a docent at various historic houses with Historic Charleston Foundation, or at the Edmonston-Alston House.
  7. What is your weirdest or most interesting talent or fact about yourself? Gosh, this is such a great question! I can’t think of anything weird, but I’d say that my super power is being able to easily meet people. I’m a Navy brat and we moved around every 2 years or so when I was growing up, so I spent a lot of time being the “new kid” at school.
  8. If you could acquire a magical skill, what would it be and why? Oooh another great question. I’d love to be able to time travel, if that’s considered a magical skill.
  9. If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be and why? For this one, my choice would be Hercule Poirot. He’s such an interesting character and the fact that he is a detective really interests me – fact finding, forensics, etc. are all of interest to me.

We build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.
